Foundation Stone: Time Capsule Activity

Foundation Stone: Time Capsule Activity

Overview

Maitland Gaol’s Foundation Stone was laid at 10.00am on 16 February 1844 within the walls near the north west corner of the enclosure. The ceremony was poorly attended due to inclement weather. A few men assisted Edward Denny Day in laying the stone. Several coins, from the reigns of George III, George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria, were included with an inscription and were placed in a bottle, sealed, and deposited within the stone. This year marks 180 years since the time capsule was laid.

Time capsules are created to commemorate an event or to capture a moment for the future. To mark 180 years since the foundation stone was laid, Maitland Gaol are running a special children’s activity where you can create your own 10 year time capsule. Enjoy a special mini tour of Maitland Gaol, followed by a time capsule activity.

Maitland Gaol will supply a recycled jar/cardboard box and some activity sheets for you to place in your time capsule, however we recommend children make their time capsule special by brining along some or all of the following items:

– School certificate or ribbon
– A letter from their parents
– Photos from the past year/years
– Coins

Once your time capsule is complete, we will secure your capsule and place a sticker on top advising you can open on 16 February 2034.

Come along and celebrate this momentous occasion with us at Maitland Gaol.

Bookings Essential, suitable for children aged 5 years and over. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
