Take One! Character Development with Julie-Anne Long and Upstage Youth Theatre

Overview

This workshop explores creative processes used in constructing ‘characters’ for performance. Playing with the relationship between spoken word and gesture, autobiography and biography, subject and narrative, we will develop idiosyncratic performance personas generated from our contemporary lives. We will ask: What matters to you? What makes you YOU! With a focus on the energy of solo performance work, there will be an opportunity to perform during the workshop, to experience interacting with an audience and reacting to spectator responses.

Julie-Anne Long is an award winning independent dance artist based in Sydney. Since graduating from the Victorian College of Arts in the early 1980s she has performed and choreographed on a wide range of projects with companies such as Human Veins, One Extra, Theatre of Image, Flying Fruit Fly Circus, Bell Shakespeare Company, Open City and Dance Works.

Upstage Youth Theatre recognise the sense of empowerment a student feels when they are given the opportunity to perform. UYT students are given the opportunity to learn about the dramatic arts through a practical, hands-on approach to performance.

This program is supported by Create NSW’s Audience Development Fund. The Audience Development Fund is a Create NSW devolved funding program, administered by Museums & Galleries of NSW on behalf of the NSW Government.
