All roads lead to Maitland on the weekend of 13 and 14 August for the Maitland Aroma Coffee & Chocolate Festival. Why not make the most of it and enjoy a weekend of indulgence?
If you are lucky enough to get an early start to your weekend, we recommend heading straight to Morpeth. For those with a sweet tooth, a visit to Campbell’s Store and Miss Lily’s Lollies is a must! Oozing with fudgy, sticky and gooey delights, these stores will have you feeling like a kid again as you stock up on delicious treats.
Once you’ve got your sugar fix, make your way into the heart of Maitland where your room awaits. Quest Apartments Maitland and The Imperial, a newly renovated pub offer accommodation within walking distance of the festival and the city centre.
For those happy to look further afield, there are a range of accommodation options around the Maitland area.
Before settling into Maitland for the day, those willing to brave an early start will be rewarded with a trip to True Café and Chocolate in Lochinvar. Whilst it might be a little early to sample some of their homemade ice cream, the heavenly hot chocolate and handmade chocolates are simply divine.
If you’d prefer something a little closer to town, Seraphine Café at Maitland Regional Art Gallery offers a seasonal menu with a focus on local and fresh produce.
Maitland’s Aroma Coffee & Chocolate Festival is a celebration of all things caffeine and cocoa. This annual event sees Riverside Carpark, The Levee inundated with those seeking brilliant new flavours. If the countless chocolate and coffee stalls aren’t enough, there will also be a range of stalls offering lunch options that would go very well when paired with a local wine or craft beer.
After a day sampling the wares of so many stalls, food may be the last thing on your mind, but there are some refined dining experiences that you simply cannot pass up. Fratelli Roma is an Italian restaurant who’s warm and inviting dining room provides an indication of the exceptional dining experience that awaits. Next door at The Rigby, delicious meals and exciting share plates have been carefully crafted to match their sophisticated cocktail menu and eclectic wine list and are the perfect end to a day of indulgence.
easy like a sunday morning
After a full day of feasting, you’ll undoubtedly benefit from an easy start to the day. Enjoy the picturesque views of the Hunter River as you enjoy your morning coffee and breakfast at either The Orange Tree or Lavenders Café, which are both located at The Levee.
If you’re feeling a little more energetic, the beautiful garden suburb of Lorn awaits on the other side of the Belmore Bridge. Enjoy the laid back atmosphere of the cafes that litter the main street like Muse Kitchen Lorn and The Icky Sticky Patisserie for a coffee or wander the streets taking you past some wonderful examples of historic architecture.
As you return across the bridge and the crowds begin to build for the second day of Maitland Aroma Coffee & Chocolate Festival, you can take the opportunity to visit a stall you may have missed or return to one of yesterday’s favourites.
before you head home
If you are not ready to return to reality just yet, we would recommend a visit to Maitland Gaol, who have a range of self guided and guided tours available. Not only will this give you an opportunity to walk off some of the treats you’ve indulged in over the weekend, but you’ll also get a chance to unlock the doors of the facility that housed some of Australia’s most notorious criminals.
We all know that too much chocolate is never enough, so before you head home, a visit to Donarch Fine Chocolate in Tenambit is highly recommended. Sourcing the finest chocolate from France and Belgium for their handmade treats, you’ll be tempted to take one of everything!
