Warming the Streets (2016)

In the Wind

In The Wind is part of the Warming the Streets project initiated to bring colour and a sense of warmth across the streetscape in Central Maitland. The Michaela Swan is a Newcastle based artist who works mainly with textiles, installation and performance art. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art, with distinction, from the University of Newcastle in 2014.

Conceptually this work embodies a strong relationship with comfort and warmth, and present a contemporary adaptation to the traditional technique of knitting.

Street Wrapping Project

In the spirit of the yarn bombing movement, poles, bollards and street furniture around Central Maitland were been ‘wrapped’ to bring pops of colour and warm comfort to the city.

The talented crafters from the Maitland Knitters Guild and Walka Grange Lifestyle Village, joined forces on this project to create the many metres of knitting that covered the streets.
