There’s creativity on every corner in Maitland. Discover vibrant murals on the city’s streets, visit one of the most active regional galleries in the country, see artists at work in their studios and pick up works from local creators.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery or MRAG for short, is a welcoming and community driven public gallery. MRAG is home to a collection of more than 4,000 works along with touring and one off exhibitions which are all free of charge.

Visiting independent galleries in Maitland shows the diversity of work being produced in the region. Stop by High Street to check out the vibrant works at Studio Amsterdam, who’s local artist painted The New One mural at Bourke Street Link. Located just across the road is The Levee Art Gallery and Studios, which displays local and national artists work and offers a number of art supplies and workshops to the aspiring artist.

Head to East Maitland and enjoy the cosy atmosphere of The Hunter Artisan Gallery and Café where you will often find artists, poets and writers. While in East Maitland, visit Maitland Gaol to explore art of a different kind. With graffiti and illustrations penned by inmates in days gone by, you can only imagine what you could find.

Jump in the car and in less than ten minutes you’ll arrive in historic Morpeth, home to the Morpeth Gallery known for its decorative and investment art. While you’re here explore the cobblestone lined streets and the numerous businesses unique to the town.

Maitland is also home to the Maitland Repertory Theatre showcasing both seasoned thespians and rising stars through the Remus Youth Theatre. If that’s not enough live art than the Maitland Musical Society will also have you dancing in your seat.
