How to Dungeon Master

How to Dungeon Master

Overview

Every great Dungeons & Dragons adventure starts with a Dungeon Master, and this workshop is your guide to becoming one. Discover how to bring entire worlds to life for your players, creating memorable stories filled with mystery, excitement and unexpected twists. We’ll explore the building blocks of great adventures, from planning key story beats to crafting engaging encounters that keep players invested from beginning to end.

Of course, no D&D session ever goes exactly as planned! Learn the art of flexibility and why leaving space in your story can lead to some of the most memorable moments at the table. We’ll look at how to respond when players take the adventure in surprising directions and how to embrace creativity without losing sight of the bigger picture.

You’ll also be introduced to the idea of “being the world” — thinking beyond individual characters and understanding how places, people and events connect. Through systems thinking, you’ll learn how to create settings that feel alive and react naturally to your players’ choices.

We’ll also explore how to find inspiration everywhere. From books, films and television to games and podcasts, discover how to consume media with purpose, identifying the ideas, characters and storytelling techniques you can adapt for your own adventures.

Finally, we’ll discuss one of the most important skills for any Dungeon Master: creating a positive table experience by setting expectations, managing conflict and helping everyone have fun together.
