Historic Grossmann & Brough Houses Open Days

Overview

Maitland’s own National Trust Property, Grossmann & Brough Houses, is open to visitors on the second Sunday of each month.

Situated at 71-73 Church Street, just a 5-minute walk from Maitland Railway Station, the Victorian merchant’s residence, Grossmann House, is open for one-hour guided tours from 10:30am to 3pm.

This furnished house-museum is a gem with each room holding fascinating stories of the past including the ‘school room’, celebrating this site which was Maitland Girls’ High School from 1894 to 1963.

Tour prices: Adult $12, Concession and children over 5 years $10, National Trust members free. Booking on Eventbrite for tours is recommended but walk-ins are also welcome.

The ’mirror-image’ Brough House, once the hostel for out-of-town school students, is now home to our Fibre-maker’ Space where volunteers operate the historic weaving looms on Open House days, the Maitland Regional Museum and the Australian Museum of History & Textiles. On the upper level, visitors can also see the re-furbished shower room which was used by the schoolgirls when they boarded through the week. Lots of stories there.

On most Open House Days, our catering team serves home-made delicacies, tea, coffee and cold drinks at very reasonable prices in our lovely gardens. There is also the opportunity to purchase our ‘Mrs Beckett’s’ home-made jams and savoury preserves – great Christmas gifts.

All funds raised are used to conserve these wonderful buildings and grounds, right in the heart of Maitland.

Open houses will be closed on 12 April 2026, due to opening for the Hunter Valley Steamfest Weekend, 18 and 19 April.
