World Philosophy Day 2026

World Philosophy Day 2026

Overview

Celebrate World Philosophy Day with the Hunter Socratic Society, and this year’s very special guest, Emily Hulme, Senior Lecturer in Ancient Greek Philosophy at the University of Sydney.

This year’s theme is Socrates, Diotima, Aspasia. An exciting change of pace as we explore women in Greek philosophy.

Fifth-century Athens was an exciting place for a budding philosopher. Leading statesmen like Pericles were studying with scientists and sophists; Socrates was testing conventional wisdom in his conversations with poets and politicians.

Our discussion on World Philosophy Day will focus on Socrates and two women in his circle – Diotima and Aspasia – whom he cited as influences on his thinking.

So, come along, enjoy light refreshments, and spend World Philosophy Day pondering life’s biggest questions in good company.

Challenge your thinking, sharpen your curiosity, and celebrate the joy of philosophy.
