Red Gold with Shonah Trescott
Overview
Red Gold, currently on display at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery, offers a lament for the forests that have been lost, and a creative imagining of future forests for Maitland. Red cedar, along with other native plants and trees, once formed great swathes of rainforest that grew throughout Wonnarua and Awabakal country and beyond. Colonists were quick to discover the favourable woodworking qualities and the beautiful rich red timber of this forest giant and proceeded to recklessly harvest it to near extinction.
Red cedar seeds will be available for free on the day for attendees to take and plant thoughtfully, collectively envisioning a future of restorative practices towards Country and each other.
